An Object Lesson - Day 2

Yea, they shall sing in the ways of the Lord: for great is the glory of the Lord. Though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off.” Psalms 138:5-6

Adam, being the first of his kind, would have been created perfect and flawless, both physically and mentally. He showed his intellect in how he classified and named the animals. Remember, he did this all in one day, day 6 of creation. With his mind not corrupted with sin, he could quickly and easily divide the animals according to their kinds. In Genesis 2:18 God told Adam He would make for him a helpmeet. Then, in Genesis 2:19-20 it says,

And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found a helpmeet for him.”

One of the things this immediately show us is that ancient man does not mean primitive man. Let’s think about this. God just told Adam He was going to give him someone so he would not be alone, a helpmeet, someone like himself. The God proceeded to bring all these animals to Adam for him to name. And as Adam was classifying these creatures, I can imagine him looking for that helpmeet, the one that was suitable to himself. But as he paired up the male and female of each species, he probably began to realize they would never do for his God given helpmeet because none were like him.

Think about it. God was bringing these animals to Adam as an object lesson. He was revealing to Adam that man is not an animal. Do you remember how God created Adam? He did it differently than any other creature. Only man is said to be God-breathed and created in His image. Man was also given the special position as manager or steward of creation, tending the garden, and exercising dominion over the animals. So, an animal could not fulfill the role of Adam’s helpmeet. What Adam needed only God could provide. God knew exactly the special someone that Adam needed. He planned to give Adam someone to whom he could relate on the same level so they could communicate intelligently and emotionally, as they grow together in a loving relationship. Now God was ready, and so was Adam, for the revealing of the woman, Eve.

“Thank you, Father, for your wonderful gifts and provisions. Make me willing to wait on you for your best gifts. Amen.”
