Dependence - Day 3

"I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations...The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: as for the world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them." Psalm 89:1, 11

Independence. The Webster’s dictionary defines independence as “not dependent, not subject to control by others, not relying on something else.” We Americans love our independence. But in truth, no one is independent. No created thing can live without depending on God. Our very existence proves we depend on many things. We are dependent on God and what He has created for our very lives, our very existence. We previously learned that God existed before anything was created (Psalm 90:2, Genesis 1:1). That means He does not need anything He created. God is a relational being. He lived in His eternal existence, before He created anything, in perfect fellowship with the Himself, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit; existing in timeless eternity and in complete harmony without need or want. God did not create us because He needed us. God is the only uncreated one who alone is independent. God is the great I AM, the self-existent one. He exists because He exists - in and by His own great power.

By contrast, we need many things. We depend on God and the things He created, water, air, food, clothing, shelter, etc. All these and more are lovingly provided to us by God because He knows we depend on them. That means we depend on Him.

"Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds, who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high..." Hebrews 1:2-3

Without God we have no existence. Think about this; if God stopped caring for one split-second, everything would cease to exist. How long could you live without the necessities of life; food, water and air? The greatest need we have can only be provided by God. We can not survive without His love, mercy, and grace. Even with all of our material and physical needs met, without hope we would die. His greatest provision is Himself. He is all we need. “But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19 Jesus = God’s supply of all I need.

“Thank you, Father, for such a wonderful creation. Thank you for providing for my needs. Please draw me to my greatest need, Jesus. Amen.”
