The “I Wills” - Day 1

“Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished. By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the Lord men depart from evil.” Proverbs 16:-5-6

Walking in humility before God is the only way to live a truly happy life and be content. Lucifer should have lived the life for which God created him. As a created being he also should have known there was no possible way he could be God. But that is the nature of pride. Sinful pride blinds the proud person to the truth. Proverbs 16:18 says, “Pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.” My how the mighty have fallen. We are not told why Lucifer thought he could be like God, but we what are told is what he thought he could do. Isaiah 14:12-15 says,

How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.”

Here we have the five “I will” statements of Lucifer, the thoughts of his heart that revealed to God his abominable pride. What does this remind us of? The pride of every human heart, the lie of Satan that is believed by all who reject Jesus Christ and want to rule their own lives. Lucifer chose to do this. He was first to sin. Lucifer wanted to be independent, to go his own way instead of God’s way.

God created all the angels to worship and serve Him. But instead, many angels chose to follow Lucifer and rebel against God. Pride, independence, selfishness, greed, covetousness, and idolatry, festered in the hearts of these rebellious angels. How did God know Lucifer was full of pride and planning a revolt? Because He is all-knowing. His is perfect in knowledge. God knew what Lucifer was thinking in his heart. God also knew who all the other angels were who would follow Lucifer in sin. Nothing surprises God. God never says, “Wow, I didn’t see that coming.” If He did, He wouldn’t be perfect in knowledge and He wouldn’t be God. God is never reactive. He is always proactive, because He is sovereign ruler over all.

“Thank you, Father, for being my all-knowing, all powerful, God that is never caught by surprise by anything. You are absolutely perfect in all Your ways! Amen.”
