Angel of Light - Day 6

“And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.” 2 Corinthians 11:14

Being an “Angel of Light” means a messenger of truth. Satan, God’s great enemy, does not want anyone to believe God or His Word. That is why he comes disguised as a truth-bearer. He comes as one who can solve the “mysteries” of the ages. He would convince us that he has the secret wisdom that far surpasses that of the Bible.

Proverbs 14:12 says, “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” This is Satan’s trap, to make us believe that our opinions and understandings are just and right and true as the Bible. When Satan comes in with his lies, go immediately and directly to Scripture. We must always let God’s Word be our guiding light. That is what Eve, and Adam, should have done when the serpent cast doubt on what God had said. They could go to God Himself and ask about what the serpent had said. Genesis 3:1 says, “Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?” In other words, “Did God really say…?”, casting doubt on God’s Word.

Have you ever experienced someone planting a seed of doubt in your mind about something or someone? This very cruel thing can divide the closest of relationships. It can cause you to question the veracity of those you love. When Satan did this to Eve, she should have immediately called out to God for help. Yes, Adam was there (”with her” Genesis 3:16), and should have stepped in and stepped up by also calling out to God, but they did not.

Instead of calling on God, Eve responded to the serpent. Genesis 3:2-3 says, “And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.” Satan got the ball rolling by casting doubt on God’s Word, and Eve kept it rolling by adding to God’s word.

Actually, what God said was recorded in Genesis 2:16-17, “And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, ‘Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:  But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die’.” God’s command to Adam was not to eat of the fruit of that one tree. It was in the eating of the fruit that death would occur. God did not say they could not touch it. Nor did God say that death would come to those who simply touched the fruit. We are not told if Adam added the “touching” part, or if Eve did on her own. We must be very careful to take God at His Word, and never add to it or take away from it. We can trust Him.

“Thank you, Lord, for revealing to me how much my life depends on taking you for what you say. Amen”
