The Annointed Cherub - Day 7

“And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.”

Revelation 4:8

God made a very great many angels. We are not told how many. When He created them, they were perfect. Lucifer, whose name means “morning star”, was one of the angels God created. We know he, too, was created perfect because it is recorded in Ezekiel 28:15; “Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created…” Lucifer was put in a position of leadership and authority by God. It is what he was created for. The prior verse, verse 14, says, “Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so…” There is much speculation in Christian circles about what it means that Lucifer was “the anointed cherub that covereth” and what he did in his exalted position. But Lucifer is the only angelic creature of whom it was told in scripture that he was an “anointed cherub”.

The word “anointed” is used of those who are installed or appointed to positions of authority or leadership. This is why we say of Lucifer that he was the highest of the angels. Ezekiel 28:15 goes on to say, “…till iniquity was found in thee.” He was perfect, until he chose to rebel against God and sinned. Angels too, were created by God with a will, the ability to choose right and wrong. Remember, there is no love without the freedom to choose to love. Lucifer had a choice to make, and he chose wrongly.

Ezekiel 28:17 says, “Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness…” Pride and arrogance destroy the very best of us. Sin is totally irrational. There is absolutely no reason for Lucifer to sin. He was given all the very best by the Lord Himself. He was beautified by God. Honored by God. Given his high position by God. He would have chosen rightly if he had chose to serve and worship God. That is what he was created for. But as by act of his will, he chose to rebel. Lucifer was proud of his beauty, anointed position, and high honor. He ignored the fact that all were given to him by his creator, God. Self-deceived, he thought he could even be God himself. Sin is always irrational.

“Thank you, Father, for revealing to me the reasons for Lucifer’s fall. Keep me from pride. Keep me humble in your love. Amen.”
