Heaven’s Timekeepers - Day 1

"But who is able to build him an house, seeing the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain him? who am I then, that I should build him an house, save only to burn sacrifice before him?" 2 Chronicles 2:6

"But will God in very deed dwell with men on the earth? behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain thee;..." 2 Chronicles 6:18

On this day four of God creating, He again spoke, and it was made. God’s focus is on this planet Earth. All the heavenly bodies created on this day fulfilled the purpose for which God created them. What is His purpose for creating these heavenly lights? Genesis 1:14-15 says, "And God said, ‘Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth’: and it was so." And God said…and it was so. Can you hear the angels singing the praise of God? That is our God. What God says He does. Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth his handywork.”

Genesis 1:16-17 says, "And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth..." First God spoke - as it says in Psalm 33:6, “By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.” Then God set each of them in its place. He placed them in the vastness of outer space. Why? For us to keep track of the time. The heavenly lights divide the day from the night, communicate signs, and track the progress of the seasons.

They also give light on the Earth. So now God created one Sun and one Moon that give their light to the Earth. When the Sun shines it’s day. When the Moon shines, it’s night. Then in an almost nonchalant way God says, “Oh yeah, I made all the stars too.” God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the Earth. I love the first four words of verse 17, “and God set them…”. God made them, and then God “set them” exactly where he intended them to be, to do exactly what they needed to do. He set them throughout the vast empty black space to give light upon the Earth. Just so we don’t overlook this important reason for their existence, God tells us twice that they are to “give light upon the Earth…” in both verse 15 and in 17. God could not be any clearer.

“Thank you, Father, for your clarity in telling us what you did and why. Your glory I will ever proclaim! Amen.”
