God the Lord - Day 3

“And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.” Isaiah 6:3

Read Genesis 2:4-6. Right away we notice the introduction of the name “Lord”. In chapter 1 God gives us his name as God; “Elohim” in Hebrew - the plural form with a singular meaning - because the one God reveals Himself in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Elohim reveals God as the great and mighty creator of time, space, and earth and all that is in it. Now we have the name, Lord. This is the English translation of the Hebrew word YHWH, the sacred name for God, which is also translated Jehovah or Yahweh, the self-existent one who lives by His own power and authority. In Exodus, God uses this name in answer to Moses’ question at the burning bush, calling Himself “I AM, THAT I AM.” From Genesis chapter 2 through the rest of Scripture, God calls Himself Lord, Lord God, God, and a few other variations.

In Genesis 2:4-6 the Lord is transitioning in His narrative to a more detailed account of how He created man and woman on day 6. The transition in verses 4-6 is a classic Hebrew way of summarizing what happened during the previous portion of the narrative. Verse 4 says: “These are the generations (in other words the history of creation) of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day the Lord God made the earth and heavens…” Notice the focus is on the planet earth. Verses 5 and 6 say, “And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.” No rain, but a mist that watered the whole earth. In fact, there are no clouds, nor winds, and no weather patterns. We will discuss this more in a later lesson.

Remember that on day 2 God separated the waters from the waters on the earth and placed a water vapor canopy high above our atmosphere that would have given the whole earth a warm and stable climate. God has a very good reason for this initial creation. Only God! Elohim, the great almighty creator of all things. He is holy, perfect, and everything He does is good.

“Thank you, Father, for your wonderful creation. You provide all I need because You are the awesome loving God who is Lord! Amen.”
