Adam, A Real Man - Day 4

“What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?…” Psalm 8:4

“Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands;…” Psalm 8:6

“O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!” Psalm 8:9

God created man with purpose and for a purpose. Since man was created in His image, God gave man a unique position. Because He made a rational and relational being, he can represent God on earth. Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created man in His own image…” And as God’s representative on earth, created by God in God’s own image, he can carry out his managerial responsibilities over the animals and all of God’s creation with God’s authority. Genesis 1:27 also says, “…in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.” On day six of creation, God created both the man and the woman; male first then the female, both on the same day. Genesis chapter 2 gives us great detail in how He created man and woman which we will examine in a later lesson. Right now we will learn how God cretaed the first man, the male, whom he named Adam.

Adam is the Hebrew word for mankind. God appropriately named him Adam because he is our representative too, representing all mankind. It is evident that this first man, Adam, was a real individual, a single man who was created by God first. In Genesis 2:18 and on through chapter 4, we have examples of God conversing with Adam, showing him to be a real person. Adam is even quoted in verses such as the following: Deuteronomy 32:8, Matthew 19:4-6, Luke 3:38, Romans 5:12-14, 1 Corinthians 15:22 and 45, 1 Timothy 2:13-14, and Jude 14. Genesis 2:7 says,  And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Here God gives the details of what He did on day six to create man. So how did He do it? He formed man out of the dust by His powerful Word (Psalms 33:6-9). We are the dust if the earth. Only God can do that! When He formed Adam’s body it was a lifeless body. God then gave Adam life by breathing into him His own breath, the breath of life. Only God can give and create life! Everything in all creation receives it’s life from God. We are totally dependent on our great and loving God. Adam, the very first man, was the only person created by God in this way.

“Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God…” Hebrews 11:3

“Thank you, Father, for your life giving Word. You give life…and I give mine to you! Amen.”
