Light & Darkness - Day 3

"Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end." Psalm 102:25-27

Why did God create light? He certainly didn’t create light for Himself. Psalm 139:12 says, “Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee: but the night shineth as the day; the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.” Our loving God created light for us, because He created us, our eyes, so we would need light to see by. Genesis 1:3 says, “And God said, ‘Let there be light…” Light is synonymous with Life. God, the creator of light was in the process of bringing life to the earth.

We need God’s physical light to see by, but more importantly we need God’s spiritual light to live by. Yes, God created light, and He also created darkness for us too. Psalms 104:20-24 says,

"Thou makest darkness, and it is night: wherein all the beasts of the forest do creep forth. The young lions roar after their prey, and seek their meat from God. The sun ariseth, they gather themselves together, and lay them down in their dens. Man goeth forth unto his work and to his labour until the evening. O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches."

Speaking of Jesus, John 1:3-5 says, “All things were made by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in the darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” Jesus is life and light in our darkness. Out of His great love for us, He provides everything we need to live. Jesus presented Himself in a figure when He shined forth his Created light in the darkness. John 8:12 says, “I am the light of the world.”

Each day of the creation week, ends with “and the evening and the morning…”, followed by the number for that day of creation. God is giving us a pattern to follow. Like God, we are to work from morning to evening, as mentioned in the scripture reference in Psalm 104 above. Notice that God does no work in creating between evening and morning. This is stated at the end of each of the six days of God’s creating. We have God’s example of resting each night and to be ready to work each morning.

In order to have this day/night cycle, there must be the rotation of the earth. To have time there must be motion. That means God created movement to His creation from the beginning. The very first act was to create time as indicated in Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning…”

To the best of our ability, let’s think on all God created on Day One of all creation; time, space, darkness, matter, mass, energy, water, light, forming the earth into a watery sphere, and setting it all into motion as 24-hour day! Only God could do that. Plus, so much more! Only God. None of God’s creation is in chaos or ruin, for God is a God of order and perfection and not of confusion. 1 Corinthians 14:33 says, “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace…”

“Thank you, Father, for creating light and for me to see by…for giving me life and light to live by! Amen”
