God’s Mercy - Day 5

Look thou upon me, and be merciful unto me, as thou usest to do unto those that love thy name. Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.” Psalm 119:132-133

God is merciful. That is who He is. In mercy He pursues sinners. What a terrible situation Adam and Eve found themselves in. They were lost, alone, and afraid. “But God, who is rich in mercy…” (Ephesians 2:4) came near. That is the God whom we serve. He knew exactly where Adam and Eve were. God knew exactly what they had done. And He knew how they were trying to cover up their sin.

How did God know they sinned? Where was God when they sinned? God is everywhere and God knows everything. The wisest thing to do when we sin is to run to God and admit it to Him. He already knows anyway. There is no possible way to hide anything from God. Wherever we are, God is there. We can always say, “God is here!”

Genesis 3:9 says, “And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?” If God knew where Adam was, why did He ask, “Where art thou?” He was giving Adam an opportunity to come clean, to admit what he had done. God already knew. God was not lost. Adam was lost. His perfect world was shattered when he sinned. And that had to be terrifying.

There are two things everyone should acknowledge when they sin. One, acknowledge what was done was wrong. Two, admit that what was done was a violation of the truth. In other words, God wanted Adam to come and admit that what He told Adam about the consequences of eating from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil was correct. And God wanted Adam to admit to God that he was wrong in believing Satan, the liar, instead of God.

Now, here is where it’s nice to know that God does not change. Just like He called out to Adam in the garden after he sinned, He calls out to us when we sin. God’s voice is loud and clear every time we open His word, the Bible. He calls us to Himself, confronts us with our failings and expects us to admit and confess all to him. For He is faithful and just to forgive us when we ask. (1 John 1:9)

John 5:25 says, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.”

“Thank You, Father, for the Bible; Your voice that never stops calling out to me. Amen.”
